‘…Belgian-born artist Tom Bogaert employs humor to explore political and social issues, often using interactive elements to involve the viewer. His Masques Qualité Export Series 1 combine two readymade objects from the Congo: a factory-produced “antique” mask intended for tourists to purchase and a popular beer sold and consumed locally but labeled “export quality.” By fusing these two objects, Bogaert playfully questions what makes something culturally authentic, how culture becomes commodity, and why we are drawn to the “exotic.” In a second series of masks, the objects come alive with flashing eyes, electronic music and sound effects…’
