Installation view Lakou Kombatan

“Free Lens” is a low-production nighttime infrared flash photography project for the 2017 Ghetto Biennale in Haiti.

I used a DIY modified night vision security camera to take photos of animals at night, outside the lens free zone. In 2013 the organizers of the Ghetto Biennale decided to make it a lens free Biennale to partially resist both the ethnographic gaze and the commodity fetishism that the lens can prompt. During the course of “Free Lens” I shifted my gaze towards animals as part of monuments.

The resulting digital images were printed in a local copy shop and added to the project in the format of a continuously growing offline archive.
