Palestine: sounds neat but falls apart when you try to grasp it

LIKE A STALE MERINGUE

2011

Performance inspired by Anneka Manning's recipe in 'Good Taste', September 1998 and by Ben Street's 'Letter from London: barnstormer' in 'art:21', May 2010.

Ingredients

• 6 egg whites, at room temperature
• Pinch Dead Sea salt
• 220g (3 cups) Ariel washing powder

Background

In September 2010, Tom Bogaert participated in the Triangle Arts Trust | Al-Mahatta Gallery Workshop in the West Bank university town of Birzeit, Palestine. During the residency, the artist further developed the third chapter of his 'Impression, proche orient' project. On the occasion of an official visit to the settlement of Ariel - 50 km north of Birzeit and with 20,000 inhabitants one of the largest Israeli settlements in Palestine - Tom Bogaert bought 7 boxes of Ariel washing powder in the local supermarket. Bogaert then used Ariel and other boxes combined with everyday detritus to construct a makeshift sculptural settlement in uptown Birzeit. The construction was presented on a bed of washing powder.

The artist also made Ariel meringues.
